‘Afterlife’ Review

Afterlife is a slice of life Netflix original written by and starring Ricky Gervais. The premise is simple. Tony, played by Gervais, is going through an exceedingly rough mourning spell having lost his wife to cancer whilst handling his fathers dementia. With the concept being so simple it is a major complement to say that the writing shines. This series was a delight especially regarding its commentary on the importance of Mental health. The showed everything it needed to Heartfelt, sincere, relatable and simultaneously hilarious within its sadness. Gervais writes Tony and his surrounding cast mates with adept sensitivity and humour. As the story plays out we witness the ups and downs of this village through Tony’s interaction with its inhabitants; it is a relief every time Tony feels a semblance of peace.

Afterlife is simply filmed and set in a small UK country town, so it is never difficult to look at, so it is never an eyesore.

I would definitely recommend to anyone who is capable of compassion, if you are lacking empathy somewhat, maybe don’t bother.
